Career Step's online training programs can be tailored to accommodate an open-entry, continuing education model or a comprehensive, for-credit certificate program. Career Step can quickly customize a fully supported, turn-key program tailored to your institution’s specific needs.

Career Step's current program offerings are broken into two categories: career training programs and continuing education courses that focus on skill development and industry certification exam preparations. The full career training courses are significantly larger because they include everything a student needs to successfully begin a career within that field, whereas the continuing education/skill development courses are designed to help an individual prepare for a certification test or gain an additional skill.

Educational institutions selecting the for-credit option typically choose to offer the career training programs over two or three terms. Institutions desiring to incorporate the program into a continuing education unit generally offer an open-entry, self-paced program.

Career Training Programs:

Pharmacy Technician

The Career Step Pharmacy Technician program is designed to provide students both an academic and practical background as they pursue a pharmacy technician career and seek national certification. With the Career Step program, students are prepared for work in both retail and institutional settings, and they gain the knowledge and skills necessary to sit for the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) exam immediately after graduation.

Medical Transcription Curriculum

While there is no formal accreditation process for medical transcription training programs, Career Step's Medical Transcription educational curriculum is one of only a handful of programs that have been approved by the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI; formerly the American Association of Medical Transcription, or AAMT). The Career Step program is designed to ensure competency by encouraging students to master each concept before they move on, and many graduates are able to quickly find home-based employment in the rapidly growing medical transcription career field.

Medical Coding and Billing Curriculum

Career Step's Medical Coding and Billing programs are designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills they need to successfully enter either the inpatient or outpatient coding workplace. The Career Step programs are unique in that they offer comprehensive medical coding and billing practicums, which require students to code over 500 authentic medical records and gain actual experience before graduating. Students are well prepared for the appropriate national entry-level coding certification exams required for employment in the industry, and graduates of the Career Step program have significantly higher pass rates than the national averages for these exams.

Continuing Education/Skill Development Courses:

CMT Exam Prep Curriculum

Career Step training and the Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) credential are recognized by employers as a mark of a qualified, competent, and experienced medical transcriptionist. The Career Step CMT Exam Prep training program gives students all the tools they need to successfully pass the CMT exam, and the program is shorter than the other Career Step training programs as it can be completed in only 75 hours.

RMT Exam Prep Curriculum

Transcriptionists who do not qualify for the Certified Medical Transcriptionist (CMT) exam can set themselves apart by earning the Registered Medical Transcriptionist (RMT) credential. This credential helps professional medical transcriptionists stand out in the industry. The Career Step training course helps students review essential material and learn test-taking strategies. The RMT Exam Prep course can be completed in 75 hours.

Medical Terminology

Careers in healthcare, and many related fields, require the ability to understand medical words, spell them correctly, and, in some occupations, pronounce and recognize them in spoken language. Mastering medical language is crucial for individuals in these fields, and Career Step’s Medical Terminology course offers a focused study of medical terminology that helps students gain the knowledge and skills they need to become more effective and valuable employees.
